On the QT

There's a question rattling around in my head, y'all. I want to ask it, but I'm askeert I'll somehow be telling on myself, even though I honestly can't figure out what I'd be telling. But YOU might now the answer, which might lead you to believe something about me that even I don't know about me. Or if I do know it about me, I don't know why it would be the answer to this particular question.

Why do I keep getting these really crude, disgusting, embarrass-me-until-my-scalp-turns-purple-and-itches emails in my bulk mail box? What on earth did I DO, or SAY, or LOOK UP that got me on a list of people who might be interested in something like THAT? And WHAT do I hafta do to get my sweet little naive, innocent self back OFF the list, for cryin' outloud?

The titles of these emails are SO vulgar and embarrassing that even my manly, make-jokes-about-everything and/or tease-me-until-I-crumple-into-a-red-hyperventilating-heap husband, when he accidentally sees my email box over my shoulder, CAN'T BRING HIMSELF SAY A WORD! This is even too awful for HIM to comment upon! But I can feel him looking and even getting a little freaked out that MY WIFE GETS EMAILS ENTITLED *WHAT?* (You know how when you know someone really well, you can FEEL their body tense up or their eyes burn when there's something going on that they don't GET or don't like, even if you can't see them?) I never say anything to HIM about them because ugh!, that is a dialogue I don't even want to open up, you know?

Do you know what I'm talking about? Do you? Have you ever had this problem, and what did you do to get it to STOP? Many of my REAL emails (some of them from Y'ALL!) have started going to my bulk folder for unknown reasons, too, so I can't just STOP opening it.

BUT ... YU-UCK!

  1. I get them too! I started getting them when I signed up on the diapers/formulas sites for coupons/free stuff. I don't know how to stop them but they go into a junk mail folder so once a week I clean that folder out...

  2. If you have microsoft mail, you can block the sender, in addition to the web domain they came
from - I have two different spam filters on my mail and I still manage to get that junk once in a while. I'd rather my husband see it than one of my kids. :)

  3. Ugh ... I had those too. I've now changed my email address and they have stopped. I didn't change it for that reason, but it's been a nice bonus !!!

  4. I get them too and have no idea why. I check whats in my bulk e-mail and delete anything questionable without opening it. I have heard that if you open them it makes it worse (I don't know how they would know, but I'm no computer genius!) Anyway - after ignoring them for a while, I rarely get them, although I'm sure they will start up again. Good luck!

  5. I recently started getting them when I put my email address in a lot of comment sections during the big blog giveaway days. I knew I shouldn't have done it but I didn't think I would be able to go back to check every single give away to see if I had won.

I think bots go around searching blogs for email addresses and then the spam begins. Luckily I have a pretty good spam filter and everything automatically goes into a junk folder. I don't even have to look at it.

  6. Ack! I know the feeling. For my personal email I have it on the very super highest spam filter--even my Grandma had to apply to get in! So far the pervs and their software haven't found my blog email--when they do I'll have to add a filter there too. I've seen people write out their email like megan at fried okra dot com--maybe that would help? Good luck.

  8. I think if you've ever put your email address "out there" - for a contest, or to join a group, or the grocery store, etc., it happens. Something I've done (although it didn't help forever) is that I have two email accounts - a real one that my friends know about, and a "junk" one that I use to put "out there".
Sahmmy makes a good point - don't put the actual email address on a blog or on the web if possible.
And, I too believe that the emails have a "track-back" feature, so that if you open them, the sender-bot knows it's a live account, and will send tons more. If possible, check your mail in a manner where you don't have to open them to see that they are worthy of deletion.
Spam is out there, and until the big head internet cheeses figure out how to do something about it, we have to clean our own houses, I guess.

  9. When you figure it out let us know. I too felt so violated, and wondered if I had some how stumbled on some covert porn sight accidentally. Lands. Vile stuff.

  10. I get them too...but MANY more on the email address that I don't even use (yahoo!) than on the one I actually use for EVERYTHING...I do occassionally get some on my REAL email address, but I mark them as spam, and they are deleted automatically if that address tries to send something to me again.

  11. While I agree they make skin crawl, make me blush & at first made me feel like I had been somewhere I should NOT have been.........I find amusement in the fact that they promise to grow larger body parts that I don't even HAVE!!! My computer techie son-in-law says just DONT OPEN them or they will never stop! And don't sign up of ANYTHING!!!!!

  13. I keep 2 email addresses. One I give to anyone and anything when I need an email address and the other I only give to the people I want to have it. I still get a few spam at that one but nowhere near the amount I get at my throw away address.

  14. This was happening to me so MUCH that I finally have had to stop using my hotmail account almost altogther. So far (knocking furiously on wood), my gmail account has proven to be a MUCH better spam blocker. SO FAR. (fingers crossed) It's the one I put on all blog comments, so this violation-free time may be coming to an end someday.

  15. When you type your email address anywhere, spammers can lift it and it really has nothing to do with much else. You leave your email on blogs (sometimes it's not hidden) or on websites where you sign up for things (i.e. yahoo).

There isn't anything much you can do to get off "the list" other than blocking the email. The thing with that is that they use about 500,000 different emails so it really won't make much difference, blocking ONE of them - you know? You MAY be able to set up a junk mail filter with those specific terms and it would automatically junk them so you wouldn't HAVE to see them. Other than that, I don't know!

  16. And oh yeah - DO NOT open them. If you open them or click on anything, they KNOW your email is real and you'll get added to more things.

  19. I got a second (and supbsequent) email address, that I only used when filling out forms, or sweepstakes or whatever.

I never check it, and since my "real" (yahoo) e-mail address isn't out there much, I don't have as much crap.

I actually have several. One for blogging, one for personal/newsletters, one for job hunting, and one for junk. Sounds like more work than it is. I really only check personal and blogging regularly. Oh - and one I was assigned for school, too.

I do notice that gmail is pretty good, though.

  20. Ewww, don't cha just feel icky when that happens?
I get them too, changing e-mail addresses helps but if you put your info out there anywhere it will slowly but surely come back to haunt you. I just block & delete, block & delete.
    Good luck!
